Ladinia

While art, literature and music have a long tradition, cinematic art is only in its first steps. Except for the productions of RAI TV Ladina which created the first materials already in 1979, we only have relatively few materials. The only Ladin films are "Ci co cunta" (2004) and "Le rëgn de Fanes" (2005).
"Ci co cunta" is the first fiction film exclusively realised in Ladin Badiot. It tells the story of some young people of the valley who like music and who want to form a rock band. Each one of them has his own vision of art and exactly these divergences create the major problems which compromise the success of their project. The film was produced under the direction of Valentina Kastlunger.
"Le rëgn de Fanes" is about the famous legend of the Fanes kingdom and tells the story of the king and his daughter Dolasilla going to war.  It is a production by Roland Verra and from a linguistic point of view it presents all five variations of the Ladin spoken in the Dolomite Valleys.
Next to these two productions there are also some artists who engage themselves in the creation of cartoons: the most famous ones are Maria Pezzedi and Harald Pizzinini, both born in Val Badia. The works created by them are generally silent films and therefore there is no language used. For example the story of Lunca by Harald Pizzinini was presented at the Art, Music and Literature Days in 2004. It is the story of the magician Laurus who hid all the languages of the world in a box. Only Ladin was left out. When he met Lunca, he was able to deceive him and steal even this last language; Lunca then tries hard to get back his way of talking.
The Ladin valleys have various times been the set for international productions. Just think of the film "Dance of the Vampires" by Roman Polanski for which some film shootings were done in Val Gardena or the film "The Bear" which was partly filmed in Val Badia and Ampezzo. The most interesting and most appreciated centre for filming has always been Cortina d’Ampezzo where in 1981 the James Bond film "For Your Eyes Only" was filmed. Some scenes were taken in the stadium, on the trampoline, on the bob run and in the centre. The film The "Big Silence" (1968) with Klaus Kinski and "Cliffhanger" (1993) with Sylvester Stallone were realised in the mountains near Cortina d’Ampezzo in the same way as some parts of the film "The Pink Panther" (1963).
