Language
Ladin and Romansh are neo-Latin or Rhaeto-Romance languages. Their common linguistic background can be traced back over 2000 years but in the course of history Ladin and Romansh went through a different development. The languages derive from vulgar Latin spoken by soldiers, traders and civil servants which laid its seeds on pre-Romance languages. Currently the linguistic situation in the Dolomites and the Rumantschia is unique but rather complex.

High mountains, steep meadows and extensive woods mark the landscape of the alpine villages. The size of the villages was though much smaller before they started to live on tourism.
