Civil service
The public services have made important contributions for the maintenance of the two endangered languages. In Switzerland Romansh is partly recognised as administrative language.
On a cantonal level German, Italian and Romansh are treated as equal official and administrative languages by the cantonal constitution. On a cantonal as well as on a federal level, linguistic laws are in elaboration. In Italy, the Ladins living in the Trentino-Alto Adige Province have extensive legal protection in contrast to the Ladins living in the Belluno Province. There, the protection of the minority and the promotion of the language very often only rely on the effort of single people who commit themselves and work on a voluntary basis.
In the Trentino-Alto Adige Region cultural institutions which deal with the Ladin language and culture are supported like for example the Ladin cultural institute “Micurà de Rü” in Alto Adige or the “Majon de Fascegn” in Trentino. Ladin has also made its way into public administration. A fundamental contribution in the field of public services is certainly made by school, which bases on a parithetic model in the Ladin valleys in Alto Adige.
